“Don’t shine so others can see you. Shine so that through you others can see Him.”

“Through His Light” by Kate Lee

My family visited the Sacred Grove one summer. It was a powerful spiritual experience, and everyone split up for a while to pray individually.

As I was praying, I suddenly heard a three year old boy break the peaceful silence and yell, “IT’S JESUS!”

I looked up, not knowing what I expected to see, and saw that the boy was pointing to my mom, who was wearing white and praying on the opposite edge of the grove. 😂❤️

It was a funny moment that now gets brought up often in my family.

But I thought of this story again as I studied Christ’s final week and read John 12:11,

The chief priests are thinking about killing Lazarus “Because that by reason of him, many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.”

I felt the Spirit so strongly as I read that verse. Don’t we all want to be like Lazarus and have people walk away from us believing in Christ?

Importantly, it wasn’t because of anything that Lazarus did that the people believed. It was because of what CHRIST did TO Lazarus, bringing him back from the dead, that they believed.

I believe it is the same in our lives. We can bring others to Christ—not necessarily because of what they see US do, but because of what they see CHRIST has done within us.

It might be a bit less subtle than a three year old boy pointing at you and yelling “it’s Jesus!!” 😉 but others can look at you and recognize Him within.

As CS Lewis said, “Don’t shine so others can see you. Shine so that through you others can see Him.”
